Ampro Pro Styl's Curl Enhancer Gel Activator for Extra Dry Hair. Yes, the people who are known for making the infamous brown gel. For around 5 bucks you get 32 ounces of product. Not a bad deal at all.
I was a little hesitant at first because I've tried a few other curl activator gels from manufacturers who are mainly known for making holding gels (Proclaim) or hair grease (Blue Magic). Both of those products were horrible. But being the sucker I am for a sale AND curl activator gel I took this jar home with me with an optimistic mindset.
What sold me on it were the claims on the front of the label:
No protein! No alcohol! All major pluses in my book. Many of your traditional curl activator gels (Carefree Curls, Stay Soft Fro) contain a hard protein such as keratin or some hydrolyzed form of protein such as wheat because they were originally designed for jherri curls which destroyed your hair. The hard proteins were needed to keep the hair on your head from all of the chemical processing required to get your hair to permanently curl (ask me how I know about this first hand and I will deny the curl I wore against my will 1994-1998).
Now, that is all good if your hair can handle hard proteins or proteins at all, but I have the type of hair that will turn into straw on contact. So when I saw that Ampro's Curl Enhancer is protein free, I was already sold.
Is it all natural? Naw. But if you look at the ingredient list, they do use Artesian water, whatever that is.
Most holding gels or curl activator gels I've tried doesn't take too much of it to leave your hair a greasy, sticky, gooey mess. This isn't one of those curl activators. The product itself is very lightweight and surprisingly not as sticky as traditional gels and curl activators. It almost melts into your hands.
So a few days after I purchased the product, I washed my hair. After I rinsed my Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner out and towel dried my hair, I applied an ample handful of the Ampro Curl Enhancer to my hair in small sections and braided my hair into 20 braids. At the bottom of each braid, I left about an inch or so of the braid loose and twisted the ends.
I could immediately tell that the Curl Enhancer was going to be the bomb because my coils were springing up left and right as I applied the product and braided my hair.
It took about a full day for my hair to completely dry, due to my heavy handedness when applying the product and the braids itself.
About five days later I unleashed my hair for a braid out. I used Oyin Handmade's Burnt Sugar Pomade, mixed with pumpkin oil to unravel my hair.
My hair was super soft, moisturized, defined and shiny!
This was all from using the Curl Enhancer as a stand alone product, I can just imagine how banging my hair would be if I added aloe vera gel or kinky curly curling custard to my hair for extra hold!
Worlds of Curls has serious competition now!
This is my hair after being out in these hot and humid Va streets for a few hours:
The million dollar natural hair question: did my definition as it appears in the pictures above, last all day long? Nope, and didn't expect it to. Glycerin is the main ingredient in this product and I live in Virginia. That's just not going to happen with all of this humidity.
A holding agent and a little less product may provide you with hold all day or a little bit more hold than I received. But after 9 years of being natural, I just embrace how my hair morphs into a beautiful fluffy, shrunken fro as time goes on. Our hair just keeps on giving :D
Welp folks, that's all I have for today. If you try out the Ampro Curl Enhancer let me know how it works for you. If you paired it with another product, don't forget to mention which one as well.
