Nappy Recap Part 1

This is almost like a recap of the past almost year.  Just in case for whatever reason, you missed the last year or so of my journey, I am going to give you a real quick rundown.  If you have been keeping up with me, well, bare with me!

Alright:  January 2009, started noticing that my hair was ridiculously tangly.  I knew the reason why it was such a handful was because it was hella damaged.  I had all these incomplete splits in my strands.  So not cool.

March 2009, everything was coming to a head.  Something had to give.  My last twists with long hair.

Boom!  I chopped it off.

Spring 2009
What the?!!?!? @#@#@# I did all this chopping and my hair still looks like poo poo?  Erh!!

I still had damage!  I can't win for losing I swear!!!!!  I tried changing so much in my routine, so much, but nothing. Would. stop. the. incomplete. splits.  So in late summer 2009, I did another chop.  I stopped updating my fotki album frequently because of computer issues, and stopped taking pictures regularly because I was frustrated with my hair.  Came close to giving it all up for good.

Then in September 2009 I said eff it and cut it all off!!!!!!  I was so tired of doing major chops, letting it grow, then chop again, then letting it grow, that I bit the bullet and went all out!  Starting over fresh.  Nothing like a brand new start.

Did a freakin Bentonite Clay treatment, then soon after did a porosity control conditioning treatment. I don't know what the plucky duck happened, but I had MORE incomplete splits in my hair!  @$@$$@$@

So November 2009, three days before thanksgiving, I shaved my head dang near BALD.

"Grow hair grow, grow hair grow."  Nothing else seemed to work, I tried everything else with no luck, maybe this chant will help my hair stop getting damaged?

Okay, this is going to complete my nappy recap for January 2009-December 2009.  Stay on the look out for Part II coming soon!

One Week in With These Micro Twists

And they still look pretty darn good if I do say so myself.   Over the past four years, I have learned a few things about my hair and discovered the routine for my twists that keep it looking fresh longer.

One thing is I don't rinse often, if at all.  I am going to try to stop doing this though, because my dry nappy hair can use all the moisture it can get (more on why I don't rinse often later). I also try not to manipulate my twists that often.  This includes molesting my hair all day long by twirling ends, putting satin caps on my head to squish the style then wake up in the morning with squished, frizzy twists, or bouncing from style to while in twists like a twist puff one day, braided twists the next, etc etc.  Doing stuff like that shortens the life of my twists and make them look frizzier way before they should.  I don't even sleep on my hair usually.

Please keep in mind I don't mind frizz at all, but when I put a fresh set of twists in my hair, I want them to last for at least 3 weeks and they can't last 3 weeks if they look like I had them in for 3 weeks already and it has only been 2 days.  That's not cool.

Starting yesterday, I started spritzing my hair at least once a day with just plain ole H20 from the refrigerator.  I'm tired of spending money on product to find out later on that it doesn't work, and I'm tired of the gooey glycerin build up of the World of Curls Comb Out Spray.

Don't get me wrong, that is some AMAZING stuff.  But I like to moisturize everyday, and it does start to get gooey after prolonged use if you are like me and go long periods of time without washing.

Since I don't like cowashing, well let me rephrase that, since my diva hair doesn't like cowashing, I thought that the next best thing has to be just a water spritz.  Since this is working pretty darn well, probably in conjunction with the world of curls curl activator that is underneath, and the pretty darn high dew point the last two days, I am going to continue to do this.  If it ain't broke, why fix it right?

The big test is on a low dew point day.  That will be the real test.  Is the water really enough for me, or is it the fact that it is a lot of moisture already in the air, that is causing my hair to stay moisturized?

Stay tuned to find out!

I want these twists to last me another 2 weeks at least.  Usually my biggest hurdle is getting moisture back into my hair after a cowash or rinse. Since my hair has been liking this plain water spritz the past two days, I don't know what to think really.

I have a big suspicion that our water might be the problem now.  The water from the refrigerator is filtered, but our shower is not.  I might have to invest in a shower filter.  I have been putting it off for years after so many recommendations from the lovely ladies of nappturality.  I do  not believe our water is hard, but it could have too many minerals in it or something like that.  And there is only one way to find out right?

Wishing For A Summer Breeze

While I snap these pics!!!  Good Lord its hot outside!!!!!!!! 103 today, and 104 Sunday....if hell is this hot.......

So please keep the ridiculously hot temperatures in mind as you view these pics.  Sorry I look dehydrated, dried up, sweaty and tired because I WAS and I couldn't hide it.  LOL.

I have been watching Roots and Roots: The Next Generation for the past 2 weeks and I have been head over heels in love with the fashion they chose for Elisabeth and Alex Haley's grandmother in the miniseries and they were the inspiration for my outfit today.  I am a sucker for vintage.

Back With a New (mini) Twist

If I had a signature natural hairstyle, mini twists would be a tie right along with the braid out.

List of excuse me:

*acne from hair experiments with oil
*eyebrows shot to you know where

Okay, now back to the style, I took my twists down on tuesday or monday and wednesday I got this great, wonderful, awesome idea to do a protein treatment in my hair.  I hope you can smell the sarcasm oozing from my words.  Anyway, I thought that maybe my hair was too elastic.  Why I don't know.  So at 12 am in the morning or so, I put Audrey GPB protein treatment in my hair.  Then, I don't know what the heck I was thinking, I normally read everything before I plop it on my head, but this time I said what the hey, can't be too much more than placenta in this stuff and panthenol, so without reading the ingredients I threw some of Queen Helene's Placenta Hot Oil treatment on my head.

After I put it on, I flipped the bottle around,  Probably the seventh ingredient was KERATIN.  OMG.  Keratin.  I know keratin is probably one of the strongest proteins that one can put on  their hair.  I thought to myself, it can't be that bad.

INSERT SHANENEH EYE ROLL

Hmph!  For the last eight months my hiar has been tangle free until I did this.  My God!  I will never do that again!   I just hope that my hair is not damaged and this shall too pass.  Can't win for losing.

So here I am now, on Thursday, with mini twists.  Started around 9 or 10 and finished at 3:30 AM.  SO excuse the puffy eyes too please.

I stopped experimenting  with twisting with different products and went back to my tried and true World of Curls Curl Activator gel (dry hair formula) and Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel with naturals.

First I cowashed my hair with Yes to Cucumbers conditioner (good slip I must say), then sectioned my hair off and got to twisting.

In the middle of my hair, I decided to experiment with olive oil.  I put world of curls on the each section, slathered oil on my hands and rubbed it through, trying to see if this will make a difference.

These are going to stay in for AT LEAST 3 weeks if not more.  I trimmed my ends up really good and now I want to protect them.  Plus it is too hot to wear any other style.  102 today, 103 Saturday and 104 Sunday.  Yeah, um okay. Lol.

Stay cool everyone and have a blessed weekend and thank you for stopping by and commenting!  You all are the best!

If you haven't read this post then you are missing out

Awesome vintage post from the one and only Jillipoo featuring Marsha Coulton, the owner of Curl Junkie,  and a few other people.  Check it out!  They discuss polyquats, if shampoo bars and castile soap are okay for your hair, and the use of silicones on your hair.

Napps @ the Beach

Me and my boo took a spontaneous evening trip out to Virginia Beach today.  I have been natural for almost 4 years now and I have yet to dunk my hair in ocean, lake, river or pool water!  Crazy huh?

Tied up or Loose Make Up Yo Mind I Say!

Took my hair down to put it right back up again!

I didn't like my hair as is with just the twists, so I threw on an old headband that I had since I was in middle school (yes hoarder).  I had 50 million of them but can only find about 2 million of them....I don't know what I did with the rest of them...that's why I hoard stuff...throw it away then, bam!  I wish I hadn't....

Dang, like forreal, I need a trim like yesterday.  My ends are shot, slowly  getting thinner and thinner.  Next wash day I am going to stop being lazy and do a massive trim all over.  I always start trimming but never finish, then when I see my raggedity hair, I have the nerve to complain!  So yeah, Ms-gg is going to get her fro back in order.

Ya'll stay sweet, have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!

The Roots Keep Doing It Again!

If you didn't know already, The Roots just released their lasted album, "How I Got Over" and it is definitely well worth the $10 that it cost. In my opinion, this is one of the best cd's of the year next to Reflection Eternal's "Revolutions Per Minute."  People keep saying hip hop is dead.  No, hip hop isn't dead, you just have to look a little deeper for the good stuff.

And I am going to leave you with a small taste from the album, one of the best songs on the album, "Doing It Again," featuring John Legend.

Black Thought has to be one of the illest mc's in the rap game but of course, he nor the Roots hardly ever get the props that they deserve. He said it the best in "Doing It Again":

It's Black Thought, for certain I'ma win eventually
This unsung, underrated, under-appreciated
The one them underachievers had underestimated
Finally graduated, I'm one of the most hated
Something that's so sacred, nobody gon' take it

Like Mother Like Daughter

A world premiere of my parents!  My daddy has since went on to glory in 2008, but my mother who is 70 years old is still kickin it!

This picture is from the 80s. My parents were still in the dating phase and decided to go down to Busch Gardens with my uncle and auntie.  Okay check the headband.  I know the quality is lacking and it is hard to see, but that headband is bangin right!  The whole outfit is dope that she has on but I can't upload it right now because I can't find the software for my scanner.  (booo!!)

I'm assuming this picture is from 85 or maybe 83 or 82. (I just verified it with my mother, this picture is from 1982, the year she just came down from New York and just "re-met" my father, but that is another story for another day).  Anyway, this headband is over 25 years old.  And guess what?  It's mine now!!!  It took a lot of begging and pleading to get my mother to part with the headband but she finally after months of asking, gave me the headband.  I was like, "Ma' lets be real for a minute, when was the last time you wore it" lol!  In this picture right!  I won't lose it/damage it/break it/toss it/ sell it.  Gimme dat band!

I know it will look flyer with longer hair, so I can't wait to grow another 4 or 5 inches of hair and give this baby a twirl!  Thanks for stopping by!

Took the Flat Twists Out

Took less than 5 minutes.  If only it took that long to put them in!  Sheesh!  Now this will be my first twist out in almost a year!! I use to wear twist outs/braid outs once or twice a month!  I have been fienin for a twist out ya'll!  Even if it is only for a few hours, I'll take that!

I love Betty Boops but no I am not kissing Betty Boop's Booty in this picture! lmbo!

What the freakin heck!

I thought I was done!  Where dem two flat twist come from!!!

Don't know if I am going to roll with this tomorrow or wash it in the AM, knowing me, washing this in the morning is a big NEGATIVE.  We'll see.

Happy Monday to you all!

Dangit! I Just Couldn't Help It!

This is why I stopped looking at people's hair albums. I see a cute style, hear about how wonderful they felt after they conditioned their hair, then next thing you know I'm taking my hair down trying to do something else!

The flat twist/twist combo lasted all of 9 days.  Womp womp.  I usually like to wear my styles for 2-3 weeks at a time.  The less manipulation the better.  And I am on a mission to one day get hair all the way down to my knee caps (don't hate!).  Okay, I'll settle for midback length or tailbone length at the max.

So far I only took down the back.  It took me about 30 minutes to take down and four hours to put in.  Womp womp.

But as you can see below, the front is busted.

That is why I took the whole thing down.  Well one reason.  Like I said when I first did them, I did a rush job.  And in my experience, rush jobs without doing the proper techniques= flat twists that get really old looking a lot sooner than they should.  I thought I could pull off a twistout/flat twist look but after these pics, um, bump that idea too.

Another reason I am taking it down now is because my hair is a little dirty from all this World of Curls Comb out spray.  I have a lot of buildup that can easily be removed with just water alone.  I could just rinse my hair and get it out, but I don't want to.  Lol.

The last reason why I am ready for change is because Wednesday will be me and my boyfriend's 8 year anniversary and I want to look half way cute.  I'm all for frizz and all that jazz, but right now, I want a fresh style.  Ya know?  So the flat twists are coming down as soon as I post this up, and a new style will be in by Tuesday with updates soon following.  Thanks for stopping by, Luh ya!

Oh yeah, wait wait wait!  I measured my hair today and it is 4.5 inches!!!!! My hair is on the grow!

Puff circa Summer 2008

I never put these pics up in my fotki album, why I don't know, but I remember I took these in the summer of 2008, the worst summer of my life.

But despite all the drama at home, I took a few hair pics here. I don't know if this puff is a braidout puff, twistout puff or none of the above.  It looks shrunken and hella cute, whatever it was....

As you can see in the pic, I used a goodies ouchless band to hold my puff back.  More than likely I put aloe vera gel or world of curls curl activator gel around my edges, doubled the band, pulled my hair into a puff, slapped a scarf around my edges, took it off after I showered and got dress and was good to go.
